Fiddle & Sax

Michael has been a member of HotScotch since 2014. Raised in Dumfriesshire, he developed a passion for music from an early age and went on to earn an honours degree in Folk and Traditional Music from Newcastle University.

After graduating, Michael was selected for the prestigious Live Music Now scheme, founded by Yehudi Menuhin, through which he has delivered hundreds of performances across the UK and internationally. His appearances have included some of the country's leading concert venues, such as Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, The Glasshouse International Centre for Music in Gateshead, and London's Barbican Hall.

Alongside playing in the band, Michael performs regularly with accordionist Paul Chamberlain as part of the duo ‘Chamberlain & Haywood’. Together, they present an eclectic repertoire spanning world, folk, and classical music. In this setting, Michael showcases his versatility as a multi-instrumentalist, also performing on clarinet, whistle, and saxophone.

He now inspires the next generation as a secondary school music teacher in the Scottish Borders.
